Melanie Medeiros - June 2022 @ Market St

Melanie dai Medeiros is an interdisciplinary visual artist and unconventional papermaker who resides on the East Bay of Rhode Island.  Her artwork uses materials and processes that elaborate on the inconsistencies of memory both in the narrative of imagery and physicality of the material. Medeiros builds casts, molds, and frames to pull and build sculptural papers from abaca pulp and upcycled materials.  She is passionate about raising awareness of our collective impact on our environment and its inhabitants and is working toward using more sustainable art practices.. Medeiros has shown in a variety of venues throughout New England.  She is an exhibiting member of the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative.  In 2020, Melanie received her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston where she had obtained her BFA in 2003.

Somewhere Between a Dream and a Memory

Inspired by true events but distorted by memory and a series of dreams powered by an overactive imagination, or was it all real? I am unreliable as my own narrator. This body of work wavers between working from direct observation and elaborating on the dissonance between reality and perceived reality in a reckoning of past events. Each one captures a memory and the inconsistencies of recall and observation alike.  This body of work is still evolving as papermaking and patterning weave their way together into this practice inspired by childhood memories then, and now life raising children and experiencing the Ocean State.
