My portfolio is built on the pillars of storytelling and symbolism, carefully exploring elements of my religious childhood. Religion is an ever-present element in society that is constantly evolving to have new meanings in the context of the youngest generation. Through my work, I give voice to the youth of my generation, to those on their journey of exploring their religious upbringing. Art finds me in my times of not only despair but in times of growth and personal evolution.
Religion and belief systems are elements that all of us need to contextualize ourselves within and decide if we want to place ourselves into the narratives that they create. Perhaps many of us were born into a religious context, a preset belief system that we come to terms with later in life. Religious communities can feel like a warm embrace, that hold you and make you feel whole. Many religious youths from my generation find themselves slowly suffocated in this once welcoming embrace, coming to the understanding that this belief system no longer makes us feel whole. It's an otherworldly shock to seemingly wake up feeling alone in a community that once felt so welcoming.
Through my work, I attempt to give voice to those in my generation who are on their journey of exploring their religious upbringing. Unfolding each layer of an endless storybook is tiring, yet liberating. I am grateful for my upbringing, the complexity and range of emotion it has given me. Throughout my pieces I experiment with emotion and words and how they translate to my work through various mediums. Art finds me in my times of not only despair but in times of growth and personal evolution.
