Photo transfer is the process of transferring ink from a photo onto a surface (canvas, wood panel, etc.). Explore this alternative technique to preserving photos while also creating pieces of art. Bring your own photos or images or use supplied materials.
We will also work with traditional collage techniques using found images and text. Vintage maps, illustrations, books, tissue paper, drawings. . .anything is on the table! While supplies are included, you are welcome to bring your own material to collage with.
After this class you will have beautiful artworks that include some of your favorite photos or memories!

Collaborate with artist Faye Silvia to craft, sketch, and produce a Linoleum Cut Stamp! Design a stamp that you can utilize repeatedly at home. Art From Scratch - Free workshops for grown ups!
Art from Scratch - Drawing
Art from Scratch is a series of four free art workshops and showcase for folks in the East Bay and beyond. We encourage novice and intermediate level creatives to learn the basics of artistic mediums taught by professional artists. Registration is required for all four workshops and all materials needed to participate will be provided. This will be an opportunity to get to know other creatives and improve your skills in a casual and welcoming environment!
In the Drawing workshop with Melanie, students will increase drawing skills through gesture drawing, contour drawing, and studying the human figure. Students can expect to spend time doing quick gesture drawings as well as drawings that will last from 10-20 minutes. Melanie will offer students tips and techniques to improve and/or practice their drawing skills.

Instructor Melanie Ducharme
Ducharme’s work is as much about a theme as it is about an exploration of color. Her work uses vibrant, sometimes contrasting colors. Each piece is an exploration of how color affects the overall tone of the work.
Melanie Ducharme has been exhibiting her work since 2001. She is a former member of Gallery X, a cooperative art gallery in New Bedford, MA. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in graphic design and letterform from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and her Masters in Art Education from Rhode Island College.
Currently, she lives in Rhode Island working as a visual artist and as an art teacher. Her work can be viewed @melducharme on Instagram.

Youth Writing Workshop Series
The Collaborative is excited to partner with Write Rhode Island for a three-week creative writing class for teens. In Fundamentals of Fiction, instructor Eve Kerrigan will teach the fundamentals of fiction including character, plot, setting, and theme. Class activities will include readings, discussions, in-class writing exercises, and workshopping. This course is designed for students with little experience through intermediate students. Write Rhode Island
October kicks-off the annual Write Rhode Island short fiction competition for Rhode Island students in grades 7-12. The competition is open to all public, private, parochial or home-school students throughout the Ocean State. Winners will receive cash prizes, awards, and an opportunity to be published. Eligible entries should be a short work of fiction incorporating Rhode Island as a theme, and can be submitted November 20 - December 11, 2023. Kitchen Lithography with Valerie Syposz
Discover the fascinating technique of kitchen lithography! Transform drawings into beautiful handmade prints using common materials like aluminum foil, oil and Coca Cola. No prior printmaking experience is required. The following supplies will be provided: aluminum foil, cola, vegetable oil, lithography ink, ink spatulas, plexiglass for foil and ink, sponges, grease pencils for drawing and 6 rollers.
Participants are asked to bring the following: ballpoint pen, permanent marker (optional), wooden spoon, water bowl, rags or paper towels, gloves, and printing paper.

Creative Writing: Magical Realism
In this class, we will focus on the dreamy and strange fantasy sub-genre known as Magical Realism and will also touch on its sister sub-genres speculative fiction and slipstream.
We will look at examples of Magical Realism and will create our own mystical realities on paper in which ordinary agreements mix with the extraordinary to form new and interesting contracts with reality that will make us question our assumptions about life as we know it.

Finances for Artists: Free Virtual Workshop
For many artists, dealing with finances is not a top priority until it’s time to file your taxes or a financial emergency strikes. This workshop will introduce basic terms, record keeping for a budget, how to keep track of sales, and accounting for expenses. We’ll also look at how to think about investing, saving for retirement, and the idea that taxes can be scary.
Barbara Rich has been in the financial services business since 1978. She’s an Independent Investment Advisor with a Certificated Financial Planning Designation. She works with individuals, small businesses, artists, self-employed professionals, and families helping them create their financial road map including areas of investments, taxes, estate planning and retirement planning. Barbara has taught an investing class through the Providence Learning Connection from the 1980s until they closed in about 2017.
This is a free virtual workshop offered via Zoom.
Collaborative Collage with Melanie Medeiros
In this casual collage workshop we will experiment with different mediums, techniques and materials to juxtapose textures and forms and make our own expressions. It’s a very playful medium but it is also challenging as we see familiar forms and textures anew. We will discuss best practices referencing color theory and the principles of design while just being creative and enjoying a peaceful few hours of like minded company. Materials will be provided but participants can feel free to bring their own.

Instagram for Artists with Bri Larson
In this free virtual workshop, artists will learn how to navigate Instagram, optimize their posts for best results, use the algorithm to their advantage, and build their community. In addition, Bri will share best practices for creating content, such as photo tips and ways to prioritize content. Attendees will leave this session with confidence to create a great Instagram profile and feel empowered to build a great community.
As a BFA graduate from UW-River Falls, Bri creates functional pottery on the wheel with imagery and bright colors. Originally from MN, Bri relocated to RI in 2018 for a 2 year residency at The Steel Yard. She currently works in her studio at the Nicholson File Artist Community in Providence, RI as a full time potter.
