FEATURE ARTIST OPENING

Emilly Sousa

May 2nd from 6-8pm at 4 Market St. Warren RI

AS ALWAYS, ARC{HIVE} WILL BE BE OPEN FOR DRINKS AND SNACKS

William Shakespear said, “The eyes are the windows to the soul.” I believe this to be true.

Eyes are one of the first things people notice upon meeting; they tell so much about a person. I decided to do this exhibit on the human eye. Eyes are a fascinating part of a person’s personality: they show the depth of human emotion. You can tell if a person is lying or if a person is flirting. A person’s eyes are their very soul speaking to you.

I am a self-taught artist, born in RI, who enjoys painting the human eye, pieces about time, and abstract art. I like making fantastical scenes and paintings inspired by songs. I like not knowing where the piece will go as I let the paint guide my imagination. There are many times I have intentions of making one piece of work, but another comes as a result.

I work primarily with acrylics on canvas. I like the textures I can pull out of them and the vibrance of their colors. Plus, they dry fast, and I have little patience waiting on paint to dry. Art has allowed me to use new and exciting elements such as incorporating ashes and coffee, as well as other mediums to my paintings. I have created a few recycled sculptures as well.

YOUTH ARTIST OPENING

Jaron Milman

May 9th from 6-8pm at 4 Market St. Warren RI

SNACK BOARD is DONATED BY ARC{HIVE}. AS ALWAYS, THEY WILL BE OPEN FOR ADDITIONAL DRINKS AND SNACKS!

Jaron Milman is an 18-year-old artist from Barrington, Rhode Island. He is currently a senior at Barrington High School and will be pursuing a bachelor's degree in Studio Arts at Vassar College.

Art student by day; a drag queen by night, Milman has an established career as a drag queen. However, as of recently, many states have begun to employ legislation that targets and threatens drag performances in what Milman believes to be a deliberate attempt to repress the queer community's efforts for sexual equality. Milman remarks, “Drag is an essential part of queer culture; drag performers have played a crucial role in the sexual equality movements throughout American history, and as a queer person and a drag performer, I am deeply unsettled that my community's rights have become an increasingly controversial subject of political debate.”

Milman’s experiences as a performer and activist heavily inspire his artwork. His most recent body of work includes a series of caricature-like self-portraits featuring Milman’s signature lurid palette, exaggerated proportions, and artistic allusions through which he explores the significance of drag and feminine expression within the queer community.

Milman states, “With my art, I want to spread my message and actively educate about queer culture, remark on drag's prevalence and cultural significance, and celebrate the art. As an artist, I want to fight for my community’s place in the world.”

April 11th from 6-8pm at 4 Market St. Warren RI

SNACK BOARD DONATED BY ARC{HIVE}. AS ALWAYS, they WILL BE BE OPEN FOR ADDITIONAL DRINKS AND SNACKS!

I am a painter inspired by the intricacies of the human mind and inner thought. I use realism and abstract elements in my artwork, creating visually and emotionally enticing pieces.

Most people would glance at a blank canvas and see a stark, empty, white space- simply put, boring and maybe even daunting. However, upon looking at a blank canvas, I see opportunity. An opportunity to grace the untouched surface with an array of bright and vivid colors. An opportunity to experiment with new techniques, concepts, and mediums. Most importantly, I see an opportunity to create something that evokes a sense of passion and emotion not just in myself but also within the observer. This, to me, is the most valuable facet of painting- the ability to expel feelings and sentiments from a completely visual aspect.

I primarily enjoy oil paint as my medium. The thick and opaque texture, which can easily be altered with oil mediums, allows me to pursue various directions within my art. Layering thicker paint provides for a more textured and interesting piece- useful for more abstract and interpretive works. Thinning out the paint with oil-based mediums gives me a smooth and silky consistency I look to use for realism and portraiture. I can manipulate the thinner paints easily, which is very useful for small and intricate details.

In my pieces, I focus on occurrences within the human mind- whether I’m exploring self-conflicting thoughts or touching on nostalgia and memories, the human mind holds immense power and ability- one I find incredibly intriguing. It also derives genuine emotions, as the mind is fragile and capable of intense feelings.

My goal as I continue to pursue my passion is to create art for the rest of my life, regardless of whether it’s as a side hobby or a full-time job. My life would not be complete without the ability to express myself in this creative outlet. I hope to create pieces of art others can enjoy, finding something new to observe with each viewing. I also aspire to create commissions for others, allowing them to connect emotionally and personally with art in a way they may not have ever before.

Portraits of dogs

I have been a practicing Artist in Rhode Island since 1959 which involved teaching, museum work, making corporate art wall hangings with an agent, publishing a book, Taaniko, and making documentary videos.

DOGS!   Some dogs are owned by my friends and others are portraits of my dog and also there are portraits of made up dogs.  The medium is collage which requires: heavy paper, a tiny pair of scissors, glue, and lots of magazines.   It also requires a room where one can make a big mess.  If anyone viewing the exhibition is interested in having  me create a portrait of their dog, see contact info below.

COLLABORATOR FEATURE OPENING

Michael Camara

March 7th from 6-8pm

at 4 Market St. Warren RI

AS ALWAYS, ARC{HIVE} WILL BE BE OPEN FOR DRINKS AND SNACKS!

Michael is a contemporary artist that primarily creates artworks that are inspired by his hikes and coastal walks. Through a series of notes, thumbnails and poems, he completes finished pen and ink drawings of the moments captured from that day. He believes in the subtle experiences of our interactions with nature. May they be small or profound, the experiences are significant.

His work is typically small in scale and monochromatic with detailed cross hatching that features atmospheric lighting. His ocean studies provide a near abstraction of the shapes and forms, while his forest and wooden compositions feature more detailed experiences.

Overall, Michael's work celebrates the human connection to the natural world and encourages us to appreciate the subtle moments that can inspire us to connect with nature in a deeper way.

AS ALWAYS, ARC{HIVE} WILL BE BE OPEN FOR DRINKS AND SNACKS!

After performing as a vocalist/songwriter for over 20 years, I shifted to the visual arts as an additional outlet to express myself. My fascination with the human psyche and awareness of the uniqueness of each individual prompted me to obtain a BA in psychology from Wellesley College, where I helped to develop psychological scales in the personality psychology field. Past interactions with audiences while performing music and free-lance make-up gigs paired with my education have influenced my ability to capture the essence of a person on canvas. Besides attempting to understand others through paint, I also like to express my inner world. Water features, nocturnes, and portraits are some of my favorite subjects. Since a young age, I have been fascinated by city lights in the evening. Some of my earliest memories include peering out of the car window at the lights in downtown Providence. I developed a fondness for the water while walking along the harbor in Bristol, RI, where my parents owned a bakery. I continuously seek to help the viewer understand my journey as much as I share my journey to understand others. With intention, passion, and creativity I aim to create pieces now and in the future that have depth and meaning. I continue to exhibit at galleries and work on commissions. Currently, I am creating an ekphrastic project, combining poems with art pieces.

Instructor Matt Slobogan

The Preservation Framer is a family-owned, small business, specializing in design solutions for custom picture framing and presentation. We opened in 2008 in the suburb of North Attleboro, a once-thriving jewelry town. Drawn to the historic aesthetic of the post-industrial architecture we were able to bring the tin ceilings, brick walls, and hardwood floors of our beautiful showroom and gallery back to life. The Preservation Framer is focused on serving the community, supporting the arts, and providing unparalleled design services for custom picture framing, digital photo restoration, and printing.

Matt opened The Preservation Framer in 2008. The economy wasn’t strong and businesses were leaving, not coming into town. Matt had a vision and most importantly had the passion and drive to support it. His wife, Annie, was there to fuel his passion with support at home. Since opening over thirteen years ago, the business has grown. The business moved and expanded in 2018. Annie is more involved with the business, and together they continue to offer more to their community through products, classes, events, art, and music. They are very involved in their community. They started a local business owners group for networking, sharing experiences and giving back to the community.

Jill is a healthcare professional that believes in having a balance of life. The right brain, appreciation of art, music and color balances the 40+ hour a week work week of math and science. She enjoys poetry, reading, cooking and baking as well as puzzles of any kind, when not working on her art. You will even find original poetry on the back of some select pieces.

Growing up on Long Island to parents that appreciated a well-rounded child, Jill has been exposed to art classes from an early age, drawing and painting, sculpture, and more. She grew up watching her mother practice stained glass, quilting and macrame while her father could fix or build anything;  as young as two years old, Jill had a paint scraper and paintbrush in her hand. Their home was always full of art supplies and woodworking tools, and nothing was off-limits.

Jill brought that love of working with her hands into her adult life. Her mixed media collages are made of commercial and homemade papers dyed by hand, pastels, paint, pen and ink, and colored pencil. With little perfect edges in nature, few scissor cut edges are incorporated, mostly tearing and folding paper to get the desired effect. Images that serve as inspiration are often incorporated into the work. She centers her images around movement and balance and hopes you enjoy the lightness they aim to deliver; continually discovering new facets in their dynamic nature.

Her current work explores the theory that Do-It-Yourself (DIY) culture is a form of quiet resistance to consumerism. To practice DIY is to undertake a complicated task without the help of a paid professional. As DIYers learn to create and repair items on their own, they are freed in part from the cyclical role of the consumer: to purchase an item, discard it when wear begins to show, and then purchase a replacement. According to extended self theory, we associate important objects with pieces of our identity. Through creating, DIYers craft identities outside the monetary constraints of our consumer society. DIY is joyful, resilient, and visionary. She is fascinated by how people use DIY to personalize the trending kitschy, maximalist aesthetic and make their homes and wardrobes playful and cheery. She is also fascinated by the meaning viewers find in her paintings; her intended meaning is just one of many.

AS ALWAYS, ARC{HIVE} WILL BE BE OPEN FOR DRINKS AND SNACKS!

My portfolio is built on the pillars of storytelling and symbolism, carefully exploring elements of my religious childhood. Religion is an ever-present element in society that is constantly evolving to have new meanings in the context of the youngest generation. Through my work, I give voice to the youth of my generation, to those on their journey of exploring their religious upbringing. Art finds me in my times of not only despair but in times of growth and personal evolution.

Religion and belief systems are elements that all of us need to contextualize ourselves within and decide if we want to place ourselves into the narratives that they create. Perhaps many of us were born into a religious context, a preset belief system that we come to terms with later in life. Religious communities can feel like a warm embrace, that hold you and make you feel whole.  Many religious youths from my generation find themselves slowly suffocated in this once welcoming embrace, coming to the understanding that this belief system no longer makes us feel whole. It's an otherworldly shock to seemingly wake up feeling alone in a community that once felt so welcoming.

Through my work, I attempt to give voice to those in my generation who are on their journey of exploring their religious upbringing. Unfolding each layer of an endless storybook is tiring, yet liberating. I am grateful for my upbringing, the complexity and range of emotion it has given me. Throughout my pieces I experiment with emotion and words and how they translate to my work through various mediums. Art finds me in my times of not only despair but in times of growth and personal evolution.
